A Dreary Morning

This is all that's left of the Hulk Hogan's Pastamania building and its neighbor to the north. The lots have been seeded with grass, so I suppose there's no plans to build anything in the near future.

Tearing Down Buildings in Cedar-Riverside (2)

I came back the next day (Tuesday the 3rd) with a different lens and took some wide-angle images.

This is taken from nearly the same angle as the Hulk Hogan's Pastamania image from 2/20 in this post. You can actually see the forlorn remains of the Pastamania awning in the junk heap in the middleground.

Messy sidewalk by the destruction. That's the Mixed Blood Theatre in the background, and also the chair in a tree.

Tearing Down Buildings in Cedar-Riverside

The above is what's left of the Hulk Hogan's Pastamania building in Cedar-Riverside. I'm not surprised, given the nature of the activity that's been going on there over the past few months (and they've been vacant for quite a while before that), but it's still a bit of a shock to unexpectedly come upon buildings being destroyed.

Big machine goin' at it.

This is the building just to the south, across 5th St. It is also being torn down.

The "No XL" notation isn't graffiti. It means "No Xcel Energy service at this location". That could be gas, or electricity, or both - what Xcel supplies depends on what part of town you live in.

This is a chair in a tree. It's been there for a couple of weeks.

Hulk Hogan's Pastamania (3)

Hulk Hogan's Pastamania, RIP. I believe that the graphics have ended up on the walls of one or more hipsters.

Hulk Hogan's Pastamania (2)

On Friday morning, February 20, Hulk Hogan's Pastamania had fallen off the building. I am pretty sure it was still attached on Thursday morning, but I'm not 100% sure.

Hulk Hogan's Pastamania

Part of my commute takes me through a neighborhood that's a bit run down (those buildings in the background are housing projects, but the neighborhood isn't really all that dangerous). One of the truly baffling parts of my world is this red "Hulk Hogan's Pastamania" awning, attached to the side of a building. There's not even a window under it. Huh?

I did a little Googling in preparation for this post, and it turns out that Hulk Hogan's Pastamania was an insane business venture by Mr. Hogan (yes, the wrestler) -- canned pasta, and a restaurant at the Mall of America. I assume that this awning came from that restaurant... but God knows why it's attached to this empty wall.

There's strange activity afoot at this building. The city came by and disconnected the gas and (I think) water, and then tons of furniture and other junk appeared in the snow in front of it. There's workmen here and there. I wonder if they're going to tear it down?

I might try again on this shot. I thought the snow on the awning would add interest, but I think it actually just makes it hard to read. It actually fell off between my trip in and my trip out a few hours later, but I didn't take any more photos (doh).
