Third Roll of Film

My third roll of film came back last weekend. I'm really pleased with the results. Enjoy!

2nd Roll of Film

The second roll of film came back yesterday, this time from A&I in California; the scans were better, but still not great -- most of the below required significant levels and contrast adjustments.

Shooting in B&W is difficult - the visualization exercise is much less intuitive since the hue goes away completely and all that's left is value.

Streetlight and sunset in our alley. I would like to get this shot again just a few minutes earlier - the streetlight takes a few minutes to warm up, and when just comes on it has a really interesting glowing look where you can see all the details of the mechanism (e.g.).

First Roll of Film

Got the first roll of film back a couple of days ago.

Can't say I'm happy - these scans are awful, and I paid big bucks for them ($23 for develop & scan). Local camera shop fail. Next time (shortly - only a couple of frames left on the next roll), I'm going mail-order.

That said, I had fun, I'm glad I got my father-in-law's Spotmatic services, I continue to shoot film, and here are a few images.

Some piece of equipment in the hallway at work. I was surprised that this came out interesting - it's one of my favorites on the roll, but I thought immediately afterward that it was a waste of film.

The stripe across the middle is on the negative. I don't know if it was bad developing, or some error in the camera.

Another UMN Fail

This is a rendering of the godawful new Science Classroom Building. I oppose "architecture" in general, because it's expensive and dumb (let's prioritize effective use of the buildings, perhaps?), but the University is suffering massive financial problems at the moment. Stupid architecture is the last thing we should be spending money on.

There's more destruction remaining for the science classroom building (I thought they'd finished). I do recommend clicking through to the bigger photo on this one, as capturing the whole scene makes everything in it rather small.

The new fisheye lens doesn't fit through the fence like the 50mm Tak does, so you get the fence too. It's "artistic", so you'll like it or you have no class.

Note that the lens was nearly touching the fence (the tiny lens hood was). It's pretty wide at 10mm.

You may be sick of photos of the Science Classroom Building, but here's another one anyway. Same viewpoint as the last one, different (and nicer) lens.

They seem to have hauled away much of the framing and are now jackhammering away the concrete. This building is attached to the Washington Avenue Bridge, which is covered on the pedestrian level. This means that as you cross from west to east during the day, you basically go down a tunnel of hammering and shaking that gets louder and louder. It's rather disconcerting, particularly since the bridge is partially closed due to structural problems.

I submitted this photo to the PentaxForums.com monthly photo contest. I don't expect to win (and in fact it would be a little sad if I did), but it would be nice to get a few votes and not come in last. We'll see; voting opens on February 1.

In a program note: I've been shooting RAW+JPEG thus far (and the JPEGs are what make their way onto this blog). However, I realized that Picasa, which is what I've been posting with, supports my camera's RAW, and I'll have some RAW converter(s) installed on my Linux box shortly too, so I'm going to shoot just RAW for a bit -- less hassle with double files.
